Abstract
Summary in foreign language
The rocky reef formations present in the North Pacific of Chocó are areas of great diversity and relevance both for the country and for the local communities, due to the great supply of fishing resources. Despite this, it turns out to be one of the least explored areas with a very poor knowledge of the various biological communities present such as benthic macroalgae and crustose coralline algae. There are few studies carried out in this field, so it is very important to understand the structure of these photosynthetic organisms as well as their composition in order to obtain key information in the resolution of questions associated with biotic interactions and various ecological processes that occur in the area. Macroalgae data collection was carried out in two phases covering 19 stations located on the rocky reefs of the northern fringe of the Department of Chocó. During the first phase, carried out in August 2015, information was obtained from functional groups of macroalgae and manual collections of the different morphotypes were made. The second phase, carried out in April 2016, focused on the collects of crustose coralline algae (CCA). A total of 79 species of benthic macroalgae were recorded, most of the species corresponded to phylum Rhodophyta epiphytic organisms (68%), followed by phylum Ochrophyta with (17%), Chlorophyta (10%) and finally Cyanophyta (5%). Regarding the CCA, 36 specimens were identified, mostly belonging to the genus Lithophyllum. A dominance of the algal lawns (TURF) and ACC functional groups was observed in these rocky reefs. It should be noted that the new findings in the composition of marine macroalgae contributed to the increase in knowledge of the marine flora of the country and the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP).
