Chac Mool is a pre-Hispanic figure that has had different interpretations since its discovery in
1875 by Augustus Le Plongeon, in Chichen Itza. From anthropology and art, the figure has been
revised, studied and reinterpreted by different authors at different times. This papper aims to
explore the artistic appropriations of the figure made by three Latin American authors: the Cuban
hero José Martí through a self-portrait; the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes with the short story
Chac Mool; and the Colombian artist Nadín Ospina with his Chac Mool sculpture. Through this
narrative thread we can see how different notions and positions are constructed by these authors
on the conception of the indigeneity, in each of their geographical and temporal contexts.
