South-North Migration of EU Citizens in Times of Crisis

Abstract

The financial and economic crisis has been a challenge for the European integration process, and, in many respects, the study of South-North EU migration in times of crisis reveals as much about contemporary mobilities in the EU as it does on Member States’ willingness to build solidarity across borders.

To study this phenomenon, we considered the involvement of scholars and insti- tutions from both Southern and Northern Europe as the only possible option. This

edited volume is thus the result of true collective work involving many different actors whom we wish to sincerely thank for their support and dedication throughout this project. We first wish to thank the IMISCOE Research Network and Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid to have hosted our first workshop on South-North EU

migration in August 2014, during which the idea of this book was initially dis- cussed. Second, different Belgian institutions have allowed this idea to be trans- formed into a fully fledged publication project. We hereby wish to thank the

University of Liège, which granted us a special research fund to support this book, as well as its Social Science Faculty (FaSS) and its Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM).
