| dc.description.abstractenglish | Sounds play a crucial role in the ecology and behavior of coastal dolphins, allowing them to communicate, orient, and coordinate during social, feeding, and movement activities. This review analyzes the acoustic characteristics of whistles and other sounds emitted by coastal dolphins, with an emphasis on Sotalia guianensis. Eleven studies published between 2003 and 2023 were compiled and analyzed, covering species such as Tursiops truncatus, Stenella spp., and Delphinus delphis. The results show that dolphins present adaptive acoustic repertoires, with frequencies between 6 and 56.6 kHz and durations of 0.02 s to 1.05 s, varying according to behavior, social context, environmental factors, and anthropogenic disturbances. Sotalia guianensis emits very highfrequency whistles, associated with its communication and acoustic interference avoidance strategy. It is concluded that it is important to begin studying the populations of S. guianensis in its distribution area, integrating acoustic, behavioral and environmental information. | |
