Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic began in December 2019 with several cases of a pneumonia of unknown etiology in Wuhan, China 1 . The causative agent was quickly identified using molecular techniques as the Betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 2 . This discovery was followed by a global effort to develop accurate molecular diagnostics at tremendous scale and pace in order to diagnose acute infection and contain spread of the virus.
