The treatment of acid mine drainages (AMD) by passive means are the most used worldwide for their long-term benefits. At the laboratory scale, Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) are widely used for this purpose. These reactors allow to obtain high rates of sulphate removal, taking into account that the DAM contain a large amount of suspended solids and high sulphate contents. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (BSR) are prokaryotic microorganisms that use sulfate as the final electron acceptor, which allows them to reduce it without assimilating it. The main objective of this work was to design and build a passive treatment system for the DAM in order to reduce the sulfates present in a synthetic DAM. A granular slurry was used from the company Alpina S.A. with which a sulphate removal efficiency of 40% was obtained, reaching up to 2072.18 ppm of sulphates in a synthetic DAM that had a constant temperature of 35 ° Celsius. The treatment system consisted of three low cost reactors of equal dimensions to which the synthetic DAM was supplied by means of a peristaltic pump that granted three different flow rates in order to have three different hydraulic retention times (TRH) and power evaluate the effect of these on the sulphate-reducing activity. The determination of the sulphate-reducing activity was carried out by two methods, the first by the measurement of the pH in the effluents, the increase in the pH is indicative that the sulphate-reducing activity is increasing, the second method was by quantification of ions sulfate in the synthetic DAM and in the effluents, a lower concentration of sulphates in the effluents compared to the synthetic DAM is the most accurate indicator of the sulphate-reducing activity of the BSR present in the granular sludge.
