| spa |

dc.description.abstractenglish | his work sought to expose howonce menstruation became public in the West, in the first decade of the 20th century, the proper management and understanding of the menstrual cycle were not made public, but rather the devices with which the menstrual fluid could be contained. This situation encouraged shame towards this natural process and the unsustainable consumption of feminine hygiene productsthathave contributedto the cultural stigmatization of menstruation. Through a documentary review of advertising, visual content analysis, and the revision of some worksonthe cultural representations of menstruation in Latin America, we propose a brief and reflective overview of the diversity of symbolic components surrounding this bodily manifestation. In addition, we present specific cases of artists from various disciplines who ridicule the menstruating body and encourage—using the same methods as common advertising—the discrediting of the intimate-natural in menstruating bodies under the false promotion of “female empowerment.” | spa |
