Since last century the negative impacts generated by the fishing pressure upon the trophic relationships among different ecosystems have been detected worldwide, which has led to a weakening and collapse of several fisheries of commercial importance. In the Colombian Caribbean this impact has been scarcely documented, which is why the aim of the present investigation is to assess the dynamics in space and time in terms of trophic levels and guilds of the fishery resources extracted in the Gulf of Salamanca over ten months. Active monitoring of the artisanal fishing were carried in six landing ports from June 2019 to March 2020. During each survey composition and biomass of all species captured were recorded, as well as the information of fishing gear, bottom type, depth, month and date of the catch. Trophic levels and guilds of each species were determined through the use of secondary information. Then the weighted mean of the trophic level was calculated based on the biomass of each species by landing, as well as the guilds proportions. The relationship between trophic levels and guilds of the landings with the fishing gears and the spatial-temporal variations were determined graphicly and statistically. During the study, 1308 landings were obtained with the use of encircling gill nets, hook and line, longline and gill net upon soft, sand, reef, and artificial bottoms. The mean trophic level of the landings was 3.7 (± 0.5), ranges between 2.0 and 4.5 and seven main guilds were reported among them piscivorous (59.8 %), crustaceans consumers (24.1 %) and invertivores (8.9 %). The highest trophic levels were obtained with hook and line (4.1), longlines (4.0) and encircling gill net (4.0), while the lowest (more variability) were found with gill net (3.6). Likewise, more functional diversity was found with the net gears than with hooks. It was found statistical differences of these variables by gear, bottom type, depth, and weather season. This is mainly a respond to the interaction of the assessed factors that modulate the availability of the fishing resources throughout the year. The constant and historic pressure exerted over predator species, in addition to the inclusion of low trophic level species, apparently has maintained the level and trophic structure in the gulf’s fisheries. However, this pattern resembles the “fishing through the food web” that has negative consequences for fishery resources in the near future. The knowledge of the dynamics of the assessed variables allows extending the perspectives of
the approaches of fishery management, aiming to mitigate the deleterious impact of the bad fishing practices and their impact on the biological communities.
