The aim of this study is to analyze the key tax-related ideas, of a religious nature, embodied in Adam Smith’s work: ‘The Theory of Moral Sentiments’. In this study, the importance of analyzing moral taxation is established and it exemplifies some of the religious concepts adopted that allow us to see how the state becomes the beneficiary when individuals become more religious (Torgler, 2006, pág. 11), as well as how religion is conceived of by contributors. In order to analyze moral taxation it becomes clear that it is important to define three categories: religion, the state and virtue.
At the end of this piece we can observe the way religion benefits the state through the doctrines that it teaches and due to the salvation it offers. For Adam Smith, religion is not only based on religious norms but also on social norms, wherein the common good is always sought out (Smith, 1759, pág. 303). On the other hand we will be able to observe the way virtue through benevolence allows us to think about other people’s wellbeing and leave aside our own egotistical nature. We will also see how this great philosopher’s thinking can contribute to current tax studies that analyze different elements that are not necessarily about man’s conduct and morality.
